AUDIO NEWS: Construction workers report high levels of discrimination and Select blasts short courses

Nearly half of construction workers say they've experienced discrimination or witnessed it at work, Select attacks short courses and former electrician Josh Padley returns to the ring

Nearly half of construction workers say they have either personally experienced discrimination or witnessed it in their workplace.

The poll of over 500 industry workers by CV-Library also found that only 50% considered the construction sector to be diverse and inclusive.

The report also estimated that nearly a third of respondents were dissatisfied with their current jobs and that 60% would relocate for better salaries and career opportunities.

Lee Biggins, CEO of CV-Library said it was disappointing that “so many construction workers are still experiencing high levels of discrimination”.

Short courses for electricians are no substitute for full apprenticeships, warned Select this week.

The Scottish trade body has renewed its campaign against the rising tide of six-week electrical courses.

Alan Wilson, managing director at Select said it was a matter of considerable concern that some training providers suggested “it’s possible to learn in a few weeks the complex technical skills that qualified electricians take years to acquire.”

Josh Padley, the Doncaster electrician that flew to Riyadh and fought WBC lightweight world champion Shakur Stevenson on four days-notice, returned to the ring at the weekend.

Padley improved his record to 16-1, with a unanimous points decision against Reece Bellotti.

After impressing in his defeat in Saudi Arabia, Padley has signed a deal with Matchroom and turned pro.
