On the Clive Holland Show, Clive learns that mental health is a conversation many still struggle to have in the construction industry. He is joined by Ross Comer from St. John's Ambulance and Gavin Crane, CEO of Band of Builders, to discuss the best ways to look after yourself and where to seek help should you need it. Clive highlights that 70% of builders have suspected a colleague was seriously depressed but found it too difficult to talk about. "The stigma runs so deep that 71% admit to giving their employer a different reason—like a physical illness—when taking time off for mental health. Even more concerning is that four in 10 builders say they’d rather quit their job than speak up," he notes. Ross reveals that while conversations are happening and people are slowly coming to understand the importance of mental health, there is still a long way to go. He also shares how to notice one's suffering from mental health around you. "Changes in behaviour, becoming isolated, potentially stopped looking after themselves, demeanour seems grey or down, and not involved anymore are telltale signs of a mental health crisis." He adds that sometimes it's not easy to spot the signs. "It's important to talk to your mates and make them comfortable." Gavin informs that a recent study conducted by Band of Builders has found that loneliness is "huge" along with other stresses in the industry. "It's not enough to talk about mental health; we need practical, accessible support. We want people to know that there is a 24/7 tech support line, a 24/7 telephone helpline, and access to free counselling sessions for those who are really struggling."
