AUTO NEWS: Tradespeople welcome delay in diesel van ban and apprentice joiner targets WorldSkills

Posted: Thursday, April 10th, 2025

Tradespeople have hailed the government’s U-turn on the planned ban on new petrol and diesel vans.

Earlier this week Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer outlined changes to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEN) Mandate allowing diesel-powered vans to stay on sale until 2035.

Tradespeople speaking with GB News expressed their relief about the delay.

One tradie said it was a “big weight off our shoulders.”

He added: “We’re happy that we can keep using the same van and focus on earning money.”

While the sale of electric cars has taken off in recent years, lingering concerns over range and payload, downtime while charging and the lack of van-specific charging infrastructure has held back adoption of electric vans.
