AUDIO NEWS: Small builders struggle with BNG rules and plumber re-block drain of non-paying client

Posted: Thursday, April 3rd, 2025

Small and medium sized housebuilders are struggling to meet biodiversity net gain (BNG) requirements — that’s according to a report from The Home Builders Federation.

In a survey of its members, 94% said they’d experience delays in the planning process due to BNG rules.

90% of respondents blamed delays on insufficient BNG expertise within the local planning departments.

Supplementary ‘freedom of information’ research by the HBF, found that nearly 40% of local authorities didn’t have in-house ecological expertise.

And a quarter of councils had seen ecologists leave in the last year.

A retired Wigan joiner faces a £60,000 bill after being ordered to tear down a dormer extension.

Andrew Jolly who built the extension for his wife to use as she battles cancer, admits to starting building work without planning permission, but claims he was reassured there would be no problem getting it passed retrospectively.

61-year-old Jolly will now have to spend £20,000 getting the work removed.

A US plumbing firm has blocked a restaurant’s drainage pipe after they refused to pay.

The dispute began after the Thai Bistro & Bar in Indiana called Heavrin Plumbing to unblock a grease trap twice in a week, reported local news outlet WFIE.

After failing to pay the bill immediately, the plumbers returned and re-clogged the pipe, saying they wouldn’t remove it until the bill was paid.
