Over a quarter of building projects in Wales are cancelled due to a lack of skilled tradespeople – that’s according to a report from the Federation of Master Builders. The survey of FMB members found that 36% were struggling to hire key tradespeople, resulting in widespread project delays. The skills shortage is also pushing up wages and making projects more expensive. Nearly two thirds of builders reported surging wage inflation, forcing them to hike their prices. Despite rising costs, FMB members reported strong demand in the renovation market. --- A plasterer who suffered a brain injury after falling from an unfenced mezzanine area on a construction site has lost his High Court appeal for more damages. Charles Lee was attempting to overturn an earlier ruling that found he was responsible for contributory negligence in the accident, and reduced the amount of damages he could claim. The court had previously ruled that the absence of the guard rail and crash mats were obvious to all concerned. --- The No Falls Foundation is running an awareness week in May to promote safe working at height. Falls from height are consistently the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. Last year 50 people lost their lives at work due to falls from height.
