AUDIO NEWS: Clean air zone pushes out decorating store and joiner signs up to run London Marathon

Posted: Wednesday, April 9th, 2025

A family-run painting and decorating merchant is being forced to move out of Sheffield city centre due to the Clean Air Zone.

The Yorkshire Decorators Centre has been based in the city centre for 22 years but has seen a £50,000 drop in revenue since the introduction of the clear air zone.

Customers who previously used the business now refuse to pay the £10 daily charge and are now shopping at suppliers outside the zone.

Tony Gallaher, managing director of the store said he’d tried to lure customers back with a range of incentives, including a £10 discount. But tradespeople refused on principle to pay the council charge.

A Hereford based joiner will run the London Marathon at the end of April to raise funds for the Royal National College for the Blind.

Andrew Davis, who runs ACMD Joinery developed an appreciation for the college’s work when he completed a course there several years ago.

After deciding to take on the marathon, Davis said it was the “perfect opportunity to give back” to the charity.
